Sumi-E is an ancient painting practice, adapted from Chinese calligraphy beginning in the 5th century, then brought to Japan by Zen monks in the 12th century. Today, the expressive and poetic style of sumi-e, along with its emphasis on natural subjects, are still culturally relevant in Japan and around the world.
Hahnemühle Sumi-E paper responds to the unique needs of Sumi-E artists—it’s tailored to work with the traditional materials and techniques of this historic practice. Absorbency is the key feature of any Sumi-E surface, allowing the trademark “blurring” effect to soften edges and reveal the character of the ink.
